Background stories

Recommended Posts

So way back when Ultima Online was the big thing (for me, that was after it was really the big thing though) I wrote extended stories for my characters and it was very fun :)

I don't have the same amount of time these days as I did back then, but I am thinking it could be fun to atleast write some sort of background story for my ESO char.

I was thinking maybe to make a thread and write journal episodes when ever I have time or feel like it.

Do you think about your chars background story?

I will probably make lore mistakes and mix things up, especially with the "You are the one who can save Tamriel" story line and all, but I feel those you-are-so-special-stories for MMO's are a little bit silly anyways so I don't care :P.

Also if anyone want to merge stories with me, it'll be cool :)

Excellent idea! I can hardly wait to read your story, if you will decide to publish it!

Unfortunately, my story is too short: https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3145/~/will-the-vampire-serana-appear-in-eso%3F

However, assuming Triss (may I call you Triss instead of Mrs. Merigold? :P ) would approve a small effort by the guild and set up a 24 members-team to raid the public dungeon of Dimhollow Crypt to free Serana, the story could become interesting because there are quite a lot of coincidences :)

A brief could be like that (some of you, who played Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC already know that): Serana emerged as one of the few pure-blood vampires following a "degrading" (her quote) ritual with Daedric Prince Molag Bal.

There are no details given about such ritual but since Molag Bal is considered the king of rape you could imagine it was not something pleasant.

Serana is also called "Daughter of Coldharbour" (from the Oblivion realm of Molag Bal).

Now, by pure coincidence, the main antagonist in ESO is Molag Bal in person and the game starts in Coldharbour.

So my Serana would play ESO's main story to fight Molag Bal as revenge after the "ritual" she suffered from him.

This could be the structure of a long story :)

P.S. When I first read ESO's story and the many coincidences with Serana's story, my first thought was to setup a guild called "Daughters of Coldharbour".

In the meantime, I gave up the idea but I think I will "reserve" the name anyway, just to be there.

Raid would be awesome :D Looking forward to it.

I also think we should create our RP project with someone with RP experience and enthusiasm. Anyone up for the task? :)

Ohhh cool Serana, you got all mixed up in the storyline :) I will definetly help you get your revenge!

What do you mean about someone to create rp projects Meri? Like bigger events and such?

NeedfulLad it is not hard :) You just give your character some short or long background story and/or a personality, and from this your char acts. Like Serana who has now a story that leads her to seek revenge for what happened to her. You don't even have to write or tell your story for it to work for you. I have decided my char has lived with a travelling gypsy like group that she will try to find. I have thrown in an unknown father for further rp fun, but such things you can suddely decide later on, noone will ever come and say your story doesnt add up :P You can start rp'ing without even knowing your char and through just talking you will find out who oyour char is -that is how it began for me :)Noone cares about experience, there is no win or best in rp!

IG you talk with people as if the afk world is not here. Usually rp is done in /say (hope they add bobbles) and you still talk afk in other chats. It can be a little scary in the beginning, I know I will be a little shy :P But it is really fun. In beta I saw this Khajiit who was begging around Breton town, I first took her as a npc, but then realised it was a rp'er and tried to interact with her. To begin with try to interact with npcs, say thank you to them or wish them well after completing a quest, that's how I normally break the rp-ice. And probably most will be inside the guild. Also lot of things you ask and talk about can easy be turned to rp. Also it doesn't have to be all the time :) It is supposed to be fun, not work :)

Yes Nuin, organize RP events, create teams and do cross-faction RP with other guilds and factions - I heard this kinda stuff can be cool. I am not into RP myself, but being someone who have spent countless years with fanfiction (I had been Tomb Raider fan site webmaster for 7-8 years in past), I know value of such stuff. And in Lodge, I would love to see RP project ongoing - I would completely support such endeavor as a guild leader.

I would really like to take part in the roleplaying but unfortunately I have no experience.  :(

You don't really need to :) And if you never try, you'll never get experience :)

I'd love to see some RP in ESO, participate in some RP events with the Lodge. Even if my Elder Scrolls knowledge isn't big.

NeedfulLad, as Nuin says, there are some basic things to take into account, and you're set.

1) Prepare a small sheet with basic facts and traits about your character

         - Name

         - Place of origin

         - age

         - likes/dislikes

         - a couple meaningful events in his/her "life" (typical example from SWTOR: As a kid, a bad Sith came, kill my parents and made me his apprentice. At 15, I killed the evil Sith and became Darth Trucmuch. At 21, I was so evil and powerful I broke the Emperor in two and ruled the Galaxy and this was 5 years ago). NB: this is a very bad example of course :P )

The main point is to establish something coherent. Your character is around 25 years old today, he cant 40 tomorrow. He has a phobia of spiders today as he was attacked as a kid by a big ugly spider, he cant be raising spider cubs tomorrow and so on.

2) Optionnally, you can write his/her life story up to now. Either in "bullet form", meaning you compile a list of events that marked his/her life, or in a "biography", or a set of short stories. That is if you enjoy writing stories and such.

3) In game, there are usually a set of common "rules" applied.

        - use /say (or /yell if you're yelling ^^) to talk to people. This also means that you normally talk to people close to you. (in TOR, we sometimes published RP messages in guild chat as it was deemed as a Holonet channel, but afaik there's no equivalent in ESO, except maybe in game mail). You also should be close to be able to use emotes (makes no sense to have a discreet conversation with someone if he's playing the lute 25m away ^^)

       - usually, emotes or a typo convention is used to describe attitudes/movements. Ex: *Chsei looks at you with lust in her eyes* or /em looks at you with lust in her eyes (not sure yet how it works in ESO). This is to describe the VISIBLE effects. Not what you think/believe.

Here's an example: *Chsei looks at you with laughing eyes* => thats OK

*Chsei looks at you amused by the prank she will play on you* => thats not ok, as there's no way you can "read" my mind and know you'll be the victim of my prank.

Thats more or less all there is to it :) The rest is mainly common sense and respecting the lore of the game.

Try to avoid clichés if possible (Ooooh I'm a poor orphan, my parents were killed by evil mean vampires/werewolves/daedric lords/<insert typical vilain here> and i'm on a quest to avenge them, blablabla.).

Again, coming from TOR, we were confronted with a lot of clichés (I cant recount how many poor guys were saved by a Jedi after their parents was killed by a bad bad Sith only to become such a great Jedi that the Counsil is welcoming him/her as their new Mentor but with a dark spot in their heart as they still secretly want to avenge mommy... Or the amount of "secret" Dark Council members running around... Yeah, sure, I'm the member of the ruling government which is made of plotting maniacs usually set to kill each other through intricate plots but I'm bragging about my title in the Cantina of Tatooine, half naked, without any escort... Makes sense, sure... :) ).

Great post Chsei :D

And remember to tell your evil plans/heroic dreams as they always do in films :) that way other know something about your chars goals and can help/hinder you, and it makes it fun :)
